[](http://www.flickr.com/photos/factoryjoe/495015709/?ref=chrismessina.me)I'm here in Portland, OR at their [first](http://barcamp.org/BarCampPortland?ref=chrismessina.me) [BarCamp](http://barcamp.org/?ref=chrismessina.me) \-- it's a great scene, but with a few differences. First of all, this is the first time a BarCamp has been held specifically in a [coworking](http://coworking.info/?ref=chrismessina.me) space -- in this case, an expansive collaborative environment called [CubeSpace](http://cubespacepdx.com/?ref=chrismessina.me). Second, [Jay Fichialos](http://www.fichialos.org/parsingborders/?ref=chrismessina.me), the original camphead, is here from Dallas and has transcribed the complete calendar into a [great looking Google Spreadsheet](http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pbBLZuEJ-EgnwvqshP%5FjsQg&ref=chrismessina.me). Third, we're using [Pibb](https://pibb.com/?ref=chrismessina.me), a new online chat system built by Portland company JanRain, as the [event's channel](https://pibb.com/pdxbarcamp?ref=chrismessina.me). It seems to be performing really well for a new product and looks great. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there are permalinks available for the transcripts, but I've put in a request to the developers who were on-site for such a feature. Otherwise, [Dawn](http://fastwonderblog.com/?ref=chrismessina.me) and [Raven](http://rinzai.com/?ref=chrismessina.me) did a fantastic job putting [the event](http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/165468/?ref=chrismessina.me) together, there's been plenty of food, great conversations and an impressive turnout. Oh, and [Josh Bancroft's](http://www.tinyscreenfuls.com/?ref=chrismessina.me) Wii was definitely a welcome addition (even though Dawn [kicked my ass](http://twitter.com/geekygirldawn/statuses/61120252?ref=chrismessina.me)). Lastly, I'd like to commend BarCampPortland on achieving three to five male to female ratio of organizers... and yes, I mean that there **five** female planners of a total of eight. Attendance overall was still skewed towards male attendees, but the session that Dawn put on about *Collaboration in Communities* had a full 10 female participants -- and it was one of the best and most interesting sessions I've been to. Progress is slow, but with [increased awareness, continued vigilance](http://factoryjoe.com/blog/2007/05/08/we-found-women-in-tech-so-why-are-you-still-not-reporting-about-them/?ref=chrismessina.me) and proactive inclusivity, I do think that the BarCamp community can continue to improve how it promotes, invites and [nurtures](http://www.horsepigcow.com/2007/05/08/this-is-the-kind-of-stuff-that-feeds-my-inner-gollum/?ref=chrismessina.me) a wider, more diverse, and more talented, community.

Chris, when you say "this is the first time a BarCamp has been held specifically in a coworking space," you're not crediting HealthCamp that was held late last year at Citizen Space! It may be the first "traditional" BarCamp in coworking, but it's certainly not the first \*Camp.

Oh hey Raines, you're totally right! Didn't mean to discount HealthCamp -- but I guess my thinking was that it was more "incidental" that HealthCamp happened in our coworking space than BarCampPortland... but you're right -- I guess this was the second such \*camp at a coworking space!
