[](http://www.flickr.com/photos/ravenzachary/230742048/?ref=chrismessina.me)My open source buddy-slash-analyst [Raven Zachary](http://www.rinzai.com/?ref=chrismessina.me) (who also brought me news of the Green Phone) pinged me to tell me that [CodeWeavers](http://www.codeweavers.com/?ref=chrismessina.me) have [launched](http://www.techmeme.com/060831/p67?ref=chrismessina.me#a060831p67) the [beta](http://www.codeweavers.com/beta/cxmac/?ref=chrismessina.me) of [CrossOver for the Mac](http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/?ref=chrismessina.me), a [full WINE environment port to OSX that lets you run Windows apps without... Windows](http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/31/crossover-mac-beta-released-run-windows-apps-in-os-x/?ref=chrismessina.me)! (...unlike [Parallels](http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/06/parallels-provides-xp-on-mac-in-virtual-machine/?ref=chrismessina.me) which is a virtual machine.) I [wrote about this idea](http://factoryjoe.com/blog/2006/07/18/a-virtually-free-pc/?ref=chrismessina.me) in July and it appears that the reality of OSX subsuming Windows is coming ever-closer. Though many of the folks whoa are most excited about this are gamers, Raven's [screenshot](http://www.flickr.com/photos/ravenzachary/230742048/?ref=chrismessina.me) proves how valuable and convenient this will be for Mac web developers who have been locked out of native Internet Explorer testing. Oh, and [pre-ordering](http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/macdeal/?ref=chrismessina.me) saves you $20, gets you 3 months of extra service and a free upgrade to CrossOver Mac 6.0 (just an FYI).

beta = VERY beta, but definately more than proof of concept at this point. computing is eerie these days: first, running a hackintosh and seeing that grey apple logo screen on a PC was like similar to watching aliens come out of the sky. then, booting windows on a pretty white box, while seemingly blasphemous, had the same effect; i felt like i was messing with the fabric of existance. and now, seeing things like MS Office dropdowns that are seemingly lost in an aqua-esque window frame is the final sign for me, that my computer probably is going to need a therapist soon!
