[](http://www.flickr.com/photos/factoryjoe/1323978490/?ref=chrismessina.me)I've been involved for many months in the MarsEdit beta list, even before Ranchero ([Brent Simmons](http://ranchero.com/?ref=chrismessina.me)) [sold it to Red Sweater Software](http://factoryjoe.com/blog/2007/02/24/marsedit-blog-editor-sold-to-red-sweater-software/?ref=chrismessina.me) (Daniel Jalkut). Today, after months of long work, Daniel has finally [released](http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/391/marsedit-20-is-out?ref=chrismessina.me) [MarsEdit 2.0](http://www.red-sweater.com/marsedit/?ref=chrismessina.me). Besides an exhaustive UI overhaul, MarsEdit now [supports Flickr account access](http://feeds.macworld.com/~r/macworld/all/~3/152014525/index.php?ref=chrismessina.me) through its new Media Manager, support for the WordPress ATOM XML-RPC protocol for adding categories and custom code macros [among other things](http://www.red-sweater.com/marsedit/new.html?ref=chrismessina.me). Brent's [written up](http://ranchero.com/?comments=1&postid=1700&ref=chrismessina.me) the release, as well as [TUAW](http://feeds.tuaw.com/~r/weblogsinc/tuaw/~3/152121068/?ref=chrismessina.me). For [$30](http://www.red-sweater.com/store/?ref=chrismessina.me), it's a pretty solid deal for a great piece of software.

Don't you think $30 is a little steep? I bought VMWare for like $47\. All of the Mac blog tools (Ecto included) have a long way to get to the ease of use and extensibility of Windows Live Writer...

$30 might be a bit much, but if you're a regular blogger, you quickly get your money's worth out of it. It also seems worth supporting an independent software developer make a living in order that he might keep working on improving the app. I do agree that there is still much to be improved upon with existing blogging tools (MarsEdit and Ecto included) for the Mac, but MarsEdit 2.0 is a rather steep improvement even over MarsEdit 1.2.
