Google has [open sourced its Google Web Toolkit](http://googlewebtoolkit.blogspot.com/2006/12/gwt-13-release-candidate-is-100-open%5F12.html?ref=chrismessina.me) under the [Apache 2.0 license](http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/terms.html?ref=chrismessina.me). This is great news for Java-based web developers... but for other folks who prefer PHP and Rails, I'm not sure what to make of it. I do have to admit, their announcement and all the [pieces](http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Web-Toolkit?ref=chrismessina.me) [of](http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/?ref=chrismessina.me) [it](http://code.google.com/webtoolkit?ref=chrismessina.me) [make](http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/makinggwtbetter.html?ref=chrismessina.me#roadmap) for a [great example](http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/makinggwtbetter.html?ref=chrismessina.me) of a textbook launch of a new open source initiative.
