On a visit to Berkeley for the Craigslist Nonprofit Bootcamp this past weekend, I happened to check out the lavatree (that's phonetic mind you). To my surprise, they had waterless urinals! Cleverly, the designer of the urinals, Sloan Valve, left their name right in the trough, allowing me to find the source of this golden nugget and pass it on to you, fair readers. Now, not only are these urinals environmentally friendly and odorless, but they'll save you a boatload of loot on water and sewage savings! And here in Web2.0World we thought we were all so innovative and oh so smaht. Seems we got nothin' on the folks building out The John 2.0.

Strangely enough, I saw one of these for the first time at Barcamp Boston. That particular one was made by falcon. The McDonalds right by six flags in NJ has them now as well, which bodes well for the technology. If McD is rolling them out, we can expect to see a lot more of them. Unfortunately, they still get clogged when some jackhole throws a papertowel in them!

We have some of those at Georgia Tech; at least in the student center and newer buildings.

While it sounds like a great idea, we have these in many of the new libraries at UNC and they splash like crazy. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I have found that I need to stand at quite a distance to avoid this problem. However, it is quite possible that ours do not have this new valve. All this being said, I would like to add that the tags for this post are excellent -- except for one, which does not quite work for urinals. I am however fascinated with these waterless toilets.
